Ant-Man

The development Marvel Cinematic Universe has created some of the best films in the superhero, action genre and as part of Phase 2, Ant-Man has joined this down-right complex universe. I didn't expect much when I went to finally watch the film in cinemas. I knew of the hero, of his abilities and little facts of how Scott Lang is connected to the Marvel Universe as a whole. I was a little bit concerned about how this hero would be intertwined in other plots, especially when there was very little information contained in the previous films in Phases 1 and 2. I also felt like the character had some sort of mystery surrounding him, and the advertising for the film was kept to a bare minimum compared to other films in the universe, this is as far as I could tell though. The best part about the mystery and not knowing what to expect from such a hero is the fact that it draws your attention and intrigues even more and that's what drew me to this film.

I have to say, Marvel know how to choose their cast and kind of just make it seem like the actor was born for the role, for example, Robert Downey Jnr as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star Lord and basically everyone cast is pure perfect. And then we have Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man, the man is hilarious, youthful and a breath of fresh air, he's sort of like Tony Stark but less flamboyant.

Another cast member I loved was Michael Douglas playing Hank Pym, now if you don't know who this is, it's the original Ant-Man, if you're confused, it's explained in the film so you'll be fine. Douglas is similar to Rudd, they're both bad asses. I also thought Douglas stole the show multiple times and frankly, I was perfectly okay with it because Hank Pym, being the first, original Ant-Man, intrigued me. I wanted to know more. The downfall here is that there was a lack of flashbacks in relation to this character and I would've loved to have seen how the suit was created and just generally more about the original Ant-Man and Wasp.

With regards to Evangeline Lilly's character Hope Van Dyne, I was a little confused about her. Although I could tell immediately predict her plot, I researched the character a little and came up with a completely different portrayal to the one in the film, so the credits scene, although predictable for me, confused me even further. I'm unsure as to whether Marvel are sticking with the comic book or whether they're going off the books here, I'll go with the latter and assume it's off books because a majority of their films have appeared to be like this.

The villain of the film is Darren Cross, who like any protege tries to out-do his mentor and take over, with greed and power on his mind. Although knowledge is power, this guy definitely becomes a threat by knowing too much and wanting to know more. I have to say, this man is insanely psychotic and you just want to punch him in the face every time you see him. I need not say more about the villain.
Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Paul Rudd, Corey Stoll and director Peyton Reed
Once again, a majority of the plot and characters featured in the film may not align with comic book storylines, however, don't be disappointed if you're an avid comic book fan because this film gives you a little break from the havoc from the other Marvel heroes. You'll breathe a mist of fresh air when you become emotionally vested in this film as you divulge yourselves into the characters, their plots and their relationships with one another.

Overall, the film is surprisingly well done and has a little of everything for everyone. You've got the epic storyline, the relatable characters, the comedic scenes and the connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe along with the action of course, all of which will keep on your toes. Even if you don't know who Ant-Man is, who Scott Lang is, what happens, or anything at all, and you just like watching a good old superhero movie, this is totally for you. Although the film can generally be watched, I recommend watching all the Marvel Cinematic Universe films so that you spot the connections to it and fully comprehend what's actually going on.

You'll giggle, you'll smile, you'll become concerned, you'll feel a sense of joy, and you'll get shocked, generally, it's an emotionally packed film that everyone will surely enjoy... Oh and just a little tip, if you hate bugs you might squirm at the sight of the recurring amount of ants!

Be sure to get out and about and purchase yourself a ticket to the cinema! I hope this post persuades you or gives you a bit of insight into my thoughts of this film. Don't forget to subscribe to my blog to keep up with my antics!
