Guide to hair removal

by - Wednesday, October 28, 2015

Hey guys, so I've been on hiatus for a while and I haven't had a chance to blog at all! I have so many posts for you guys. There are so many new beauty and hair products I've tried and so many new clothes and shoes that I've got to show you all. I can't wait to share this all with you now that exam period is over [fist pumps].

So for years, I've been trying out different forms of hair removal and whatnot like many of you may have. I've tried waxing, plucking, threading, and I've also had this hair removal kit called 'No! No!'. Now I'll talk about both methods and my experience with them.

WAXING

First up... Waxing. If you haven't tried waxing, I can safely say that it kills. It obviously depends on whether you do it yourself or you have a professional do it for you, but usually it stings slightly and you definitely feel the ripping effect. Despite the pain factor, this method is really quick and easy. In fact, I wax myself, mainly my upper lip, my eyebrows (only the little hairs in the middle of my brows so there's no monobrow action) and underarms (sometimes because that area is seriously my weakness when it comes to pain). Once you've waxed a few times, you'll get used to the pain and used to the chore of hair removal in general.

This is the way in which I wax various areas of my body and face, if you've never waxed, I guarantee this is foolproof and you'll be able to do it.

  1. If you're wearing make-up, moisturiser or any other product, remove all of it, I just wash my face with facial cleansers and scrubs. You must make sure that your face is clear of said products just to make sure there isn't a reaction with the wax or anything.
  2. Prepare your wax strips. I buy pre-made wax strips where the strips have the wax already on it. With the prepared wax strips, separate them by rubbing the strips together and then splitting them apart. If you want to use hot wax, you can buy kits for this, which should have strips included, you just spread the wax on the strip and then apply it the same way in the next step.
  3. Now for the waxing bit, grab the wax strip, and place it on the area where you wish to remove hair from. Once the strip is in place, rub on it and then grab the end and pull it towards yourself, but try not to pull it up, you need to make sure you pull it as close to the area as possible so that hair removal is more successful, or you'll have to repeat the step and try again and you don't want that at all.
  4. Once you've waxed the area, splash cool water on the area. Personally, I use a tea tree oil after this, it helps with reducing redness, inflammation and irritation which usually comes with waxing. Baby oil also suffices, if you don't have tea tree oil. If you're lucky packets of pre-made wax strips come with wipes that are made to help with the effects of waxing.
  5. If you missed any spots, simply tweeze if it's in the facial region or just repeat the steps until you're happy with the results. The only thing with this method is that if you tweeze certain areas they'll grow back faster so I recommend just going through with waxing every hair.

If you're worried about doing it yourself for the first time, go to a professional and watch what they do, if they sell products, ask about them and purchase them if you're willing to give waxing a go. Professional waxing and the costs of it vary, this depends on where you go and what areas you want to wax, generally I've found the prices are $20 to $60, give or take. With regards to wax strips and wax kits, they can cost you around $5 to $20, this depends on whether you only want wax strips or kits for your face or your body or both, as well as whether you have sensitive skin or not.

Although you're sacrificing your time to wax yourself rather than get it professionally done, packets of wax strips do last you quite a while. I find that wax strips for your face last a whole year, this is based on a 20 strips packet. Generally I use two wax strips for my upper lip and brows, you'll find this to be enough as strips are reusable. However, more wax strips may need to be used for your body, this does depend on what areas of the body you want to remove hair from. For hair removal on your body like underarms, legs and arms, I personally prefer a professional to do this for me, but this is only because I don't have the patience.

HAIR REMOVAL SYSTEM

Now onto a method I've used for years now. It's called NO! NO! This product uses patented technology called Thermicon™, which is a heat based technology that works in two ways, to both remove hair and reduce hair regrowth. So you could say it's like a laser treatment system but without the price tag. The system costs around $200, and comes in various forms. I own the Classic product which you glide over the skin, while the hot blades remove the hair. The guarantee is that the pulse of heat will painlessly transmit down the hair shaft to the root, so that it disrupts the hair growth cycle, this is a similar method to that of laser hair remove. Over the years that I have used this, I have noticed that there is visible reduction in hair growth and the hair is also a lot finer and less darker.

The NO! NO! system is as it says 'painless', you can merely feel the heated blade but essentially there is no pain involved with this type of hair removal. However, this is a time-consuming process and that is one of its downfalls. It takes me about 30 minutes to an hour to completely remove hair in areas and sometimes it doesn't remove all the hair after this time. Another negative is that to see better results, it is recommended you use this product 2-3 times a week, I think this is a little too much. Why would you want to spend hours, 2-3 times a week on removing hair when there are other methods that provide longer-lasting results and don't have to be done so often? It sort of sounds like a shaving product, because usually that's how many times a week you'd have to shave. BUT, I shouldn't compare it to shaving because shaving actually makes hair growth worse than that of waxing and other systems that use heat or lasers, the point of the NO! NO! is to reduce hair growth so it makes sense to use it more than once a week to rid yourself of hair you don't want.

THREADING

Recently, I just tried the hair removal method that's known as threading. This method is probably my new favourite thing, like I am absolutely obsessed. The first time I started threading, I won't lie I was petrified, I heard so many things from so many different people and was mainly concerned about the pain and whether it was suitable for sensitive skin. But I cannot get enough of this method of hair removal, I quite literally wanted to thread every section where unwanted hair was.

At first threading is kind of shocking, it doesn't feel like waxing or plucking, it's a completely different sensation, I can't quite explain it. I can tell you that the sound of threading is like you're moving a zip up and down so it's kind of weird, but you totally get used to the feeling and sound of it, it's even relaxing. I only get my eyebrows threaded right now so that I can get used to the feeling of it, but I'm definitely considering threading my upper lip so that I no longer have to wax there myself.  I definitely recommend this method if you're wanting to shape and enhance your eyebrows, it's also the quickest way to get rid of hair that you don't want in certain areas. Additionally, it is the most effective and I've found that it's the cheapest out of all the methods I've tried. Prices range from $20-$40, this depends on where the hair is or if you're looking for a combination of areas of hair to get rid of, furthermore, you only need to go once a month so it'll become apart of your routine and won't leave you with empty pockets when it comes to money.

Don't forget to subscribe to my blog via the sidebar, it's a quick and easy process and would be well appreciated!
